About Volbeat
Volbeat is arguably one of the most innovative and genre-bending bands in contemporary metal and rock. Fusing the aggression of metal with the swagger of rockabilly, the melodic sensibilities of classic rock, and the attitude origins of country music, the Danish group has built a fiercely loyal global following by defying genre conventions. Early Life in Copenhagen and Influences
Volbeat was created in 2001 by Michael Poulsen, formerly of the death metal band Dominus. Poulsen felt that he needed to pursue a different type of music, so he started composing songs that drew from his affection for Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Social Distortion, and Metallica. This produced a sound that has been referred to as "Elvis metal"—a mixture of the early rock and roll singing and the intensity of contemporary heavy music. Poulsen played guitar and sang, and Jon Larsen played drums, Anders Kjølholm played bass, and Franz Gottschalk played guitar.
Their first album, "The Strength / The Sound / The Songs", was released in 2005 and had immediate success in Denmark. The album was not properly exposed to the international markets at that time, but it set the stage for the band's distinctive personality. Volbeat's sophomore effort, "Rock the Rebel / Metal the Devil", in 2007 was their debut party in Europe. Tracks such as "Last Day Under the Sun", "Pelvis on Fire", and "Cheapside Sloggers" had Volbeat trying their hand at new genres but sticking to their storytelling lyrics and their trademark combination of old and new.
The album met with mixed reviews, with some commending its ambition and others regretting abandoning the heavier sound. Either way, it proved Volbeat would not be standing still. "Rewind, Replay, Rebound" was an aggressive statement of a band confident they could make the leap into new textures without abandoning their roots.
Strength in Adaptability: "Servant of the Mind"
Volbeat returned to their heavy style with 2021's "Servant of the Mind", an album they composed and recorded in lockdown in the pandemic. The album was widely acclaimed for its blend of aggression and melody, as tracks like "Shotgun Blues", "Wait a Minute My Girl", and "Temple of Ekur" reminded listeners of the band's earlier, heavier material.
"Wait a Minute My Girl" became a summer surprise hit and the band's ninth Mainstream Rock chart number-one. "Servant of the Mind" was a mix of experimentation and familiarity, satisfying older fans and tempting new ones. The production was both tight and dynamic and the songwriting evidenced a mature but still adventurous band.
Legacy and Lasting Popularity
Volbeat's success in combining opposing styles — metal, punk, rockabilly, country, and retro-rock — into one solid and emotionally charged sound has been the secret to their endurance. They've constructed a sonic world where Elvis gets along with Slayer, and cowboys' legends collide with city sidewalks. It's this genre-fusion ability that has enabled them to construct an international fan base without compromising their vision.
