About Deathchant
Within the realm of modern rock, few bands can claim a niche as specifically their own as Deathchant. The quartet hails from Los Angeles, California, and seamlessly intertwined the elements of psychedelic rock, proto-metal, and noise punk into one sound that recalls the best of times yet is irresistibly new. From the very moment it came into being, to this day with its latest releases, theirs is a compelling story of musical growth and artistic dedication.
Formation and Early Days
The project of Deathchant was born in 2017 by TJ Lemieux after the dissolution of his previous band, CHILD. Lemieux wanted to make a band that embraced some classic rock and heavy metal influences without basically rehashing the sound. The name of the band comes from the first record of John Fahey and the Buddhist term Bardo-a transitional phase between lives. This is reminiscent of the band's resolve to bridge the gulf between musical worlds past and present.
These included Lemieux on guitar/vocals, John Bolino on guitar, Colin Fahrner on drums, and George Camacho on bass. All began working in dual guitar harmonies with heavy, psychedelia-tinged sounds to create their distinctive music style.
Debut Album: "Deathchant"
In January 2019, Deathchant released their self-titled debut album. Recording was notably unorthodox: the band holed up in a cabin in Big Bear, California, recording the album live over a two-day period. The result was an immersive wall of noise-induced heavy metal, balancing paranoia and transcendental harmony.
The album is made up of seven tracks that all showcase how well this band can merge heavy riffs with psychedelic atmospheres. Tracks like "Pessimist" and "Control" show their love for raw energy with melodic undertones, making them easily comparable to other bands like Danava and In Solitude.
Sophomore Effort: "Waste"
Off the back of this momentum, Deathchant released "Waste" via RidingEasy Records in June 2021. It saw a maturation in their sound as tighter song structures married their improvisational spirit. Recording sessions again took place in the same Big Bear cabin, over several weekends, a reinforcement of their organic, live recording environments of choice.
Tracks on "Waste" move through a wide variety of musical landscapes, from the boiling noise of "Rails" to the heavy blues boogie of "Holy Roller". The album's flow is helped by droning segues, allowing it to slither between genres and moods much easily.
Musical Influences and Style
Deathchant's sound is an amalgamation of influences picked up from several places. Lemieux cites older acts such as Motörhead, Thin Lizzy, and Black Sabbath as the inspirational building blocks. More overtly, one can identify New Wave of British Heavy Metal, proto-metal, and psychedelic rock in their music.
Their sound ranges from mellow, chanting, eastern-flavored messages of unity to war cries, the recurrent lesson from which is of love and peace-through-violence. This dynamics range enables the band to capture a wide audience and provides a raw, catchily unforgettable rock and roll that is exciting in its own terms.
Live Shows and Improvisation
One of the hallmarks of Deathchant's artistry is the emphasis on improvisation, whether it be in studio work or live performances. Even though their albums are full of well-crafted songs with concise structures, the band often leaves room for spontaneity. This approach ensures that each show is distinct and captures the raw energy and unpredictability that define their music.
This musical freedom allows Lemieux to give a free hand to the band members in taking their compositions wherever inspiration may take them. It's this "controlled chaos" philosophy that's at the heart of their identity, keeping the music exciting and real.
Recent Developments and Future Directions
In October 2023, Deathchant released their third studio album, "Thrones". The record pulls everything together and capitalizes on the strongest elements of the band's previous works, showing a matured sound and a fully realized vision. The songs are more mature and reflect the growth and evolution that the band has gone through over the years.
In the future, Deathchant will continue to branch out with touring, trying to hit as many countries as possible. They would love to be able to reach out to the world and share their rock and roll with everybody on a worldwide basis.
Deathchant is proof that rock and roll will never stop changing. Paying respect to the past, they tread new sonic lands boldly, making their sound both recognizable and new. As they grow and let more of themselves be heard, Deathchant becomes a dynamic force in modern rock, beckoning listeners to follow them on this journey through sound and emotion.
